Media Center
Mission
Our media program focuses on providing library media instruction integrated with classroom learning. Instruction is designed to teach media appreciation and information skills that meet the learner outcomes across all instructional areas. In addition, our media staff is responsible for helping integrate technology and research skills into the curriculum in our building.
We service over 750 patrons through regularly scheduled media classes, informal research groups, in-services to staff members and parents, as well as one on one instruction. Currently, we are teaching 38 classes of students in grades Pre-K-5 each week and have a weekly circulation of over 1200 books. Our collection is chosen with care to reflect the needs of all students and staff at Linton Springs.
The media center is open each morning between the hours of 8:05 to 8:30 for independent check-out, and students are invited to visit after unpacking in their classroom. During media classes, Kindergarten, First and Second Graders check out one book each week. Third-graders check out one book each week during the first two quarters and switch to two books every other week during the last two quarters. Fourth and Fifth graders check out two books every other week. Extra books may be checked out for research purposes at any time.
We have 29 search stations for catalog and Internet access. In addition, our web-based catalog is available on any computer with an internet connection. Our collection provides an abundance of quality resources in all formats to meet a wide range of learner abilities, developmental levels, and modalities.

Book Fair
2024 Book Fair
We would like to thank all the students, staff and parents that volunteered their time to make our book fair such a success this year. Your purchases enable us to provide new books for the media center and subscriptions to online databases such as World Book Online, BookFlix, PebbleGo, PebbleGo Next and many others for students to use for research. Due to your generosity, we were able to provide over $350 worth of books to students who otherwise would not have been able to purchase a book and over $500 of gift certificates to teachers to enhance their classroom libraries.
Thank you very much for supporting our Book Fair and Media Center!

School Library Media Month
April is School Library Media Month. We will be celebrating our media center all month long!
Students are voting for their favorite Maryland Black-Eyed Susan Picture Book in Grades K – 3 and their favorite Maryland Black-Eyed Susan Chapter Book or Graphic Novel in Grades 4 – 5. Votes will be sent into the state.
To encourage students to try a new book, we have hidden books designated as "Stars of the Month" all through our book shelves. If a student finds one and checks it out, we will take their picture for our bulletin board and they will get to take a small prize home with their winning book.
All students are also exploring digital citizenship through K - 5 lessons on digital drama, digital friendships, digital advertising, passwords, cyberbullying and online safety.
The last week of the month, we will be focusing on Earth Day by exploring media center books on this topic as well as relevant websites and activities.
We hope everyone has a chance to read and/or share a book from our media center during the month of April!
MD Black Eyed Susan
The Black-Eyed Susan Book Award is a student choice award for the state of Maryland that has been awarded each year since 1992. The award seeks to promote literacy and lifelong reading habits by encouraging students to read quality, contemporary literature.
Each year students at Linton Springs Elementary participate in the Maryland Black Eyed Susan Program where students across the state read and vote on the same picture books, chapter books and graphic novels.
For more information and book titles, please go to the MASL website.

Below is your reading guide - a calendar showing which chapter to read on which evening. The full packet with family discussion questions, a list of vocabulary words your children will discover in the book and activities for each chapter will be sent home by email. Each Monday we will also resend the reading guide and the pages from the packet for that week by email.
